NICARAGUA: Offshore winds 300 days of the year, warm water, and incredible affordability

Nicaragua has emerged as a sought-after surf destination for people all around the world. Famous beach breaks such as Colorado and The Boom have put this beautiful country on the surfing map. We remember watching videos years ago of the legendary Andy Irons ripping a Nicaraguan beach break and instantly wanting to surf in this wonderful country.

Although Nicaragua has waves all along its coastline (which is the largest in Central America), the surfing can be split into two halves, the north and south. The phrase "300 days of offshore winds" originates from the southern region of the country, thanks to the presence of the vast Lake Managua.

From Popoyo to San Juan del Sur, the southern region of Nicaragua offers a diverse and vibrant surf experience. Popoyo, renowned for its consistent waves and vibrant surf culture, is a haven for surfers of all levels. There are waves of all levels in the South, Playa Colorado is the stand out wave, just south of Popoyo. This barrelling beachie packs and punch. Other stand out waves include Lances left ,Playa Santana and Playa Manzanillo.

Now, let’s talk about the North! Northern Nicaragua is more remote and less developed. The standout wave here is The Boom, a mystical barreling beach break that can easily give you the wave of your life. There are also a handful of waves around the area of The Boom to suit less advanced surfers, as well as some more remote beaches north of The Boom for the more adventurous. This is a place where having local experience helps massively, and that’s where our team can assist! The north is also one of the most budget-friendly options out there. Being so remote, you can also find uncrowded waves up north and sometimes get sessions with just you and your crew.

Nicaragua, a gem of Central America, captivates with its rich cultural tapestry, stunning natural landscapes, and warm hospitality from the locals.

BEST TIME OF YEAR TO SURF IN THE NICARAGUA?

The prime season to surf in Nicaragua is from late March to September, when the swell consistently reaches waist to head height. Towards the end of March, during the dry season, the southern swell begins to increase throughout the next few months. Great surf and fewer crowds are available in April, but during Semana Santa (Holy Week), sleepy communities like Gigante come alive with lively beach parties due to the influx of Nicaraguans.

May brings rain, which also leads to a slight drop in temperature and more regular swell. The best surfing season in Nicaragua is from May to August. Anticipate consistent swell and significant days, particularly starting in June. For surfers seeking reliable waves, this time of year is ideal.

November and December can still yield some excellent surf, although the frequency of good swells decreases with time. With calmer conditions and fewer crowds, this is the perfect time for beginner or intermediate surfers who want to learn or improve. Expect a few weeks of strong winds and colder water starting in late January.
