THE WAVES

Thulusdhoo is home to some of the Maldives' best surf, with world-class reef breaks and abundant marine life, including turtles and dolphins, making every session special. The island offers a mix of left and right-hand waves, catering to various skill levels.

Cokes, the local break, is a fast, barreling right-hander known for punchy rides, while Chickens, across the channel, provides a more playful left with long, carveable walls that stretch up to 500 meters. Other nearby highlights, like Jailbreaks, Sultans, and Honkys, offer plenty of options for surfers of all levels, from beginner to expert.

Telescopes

Considered one of the best waves in the world, Telescopes is a standout in the Mentawai. It doesn’t take much swell for this long, peeling wave to start breaking, stretching over 100 meters and accommodating most skill levels. The flat, even bottom makes it a relatively safe surf spot. When the swell hits 3ft or more, barrels alternate with sections ideal for turns, while smaller swells offer pure, fun rides.

Iceland

This spot picks up more swell than any other in the area and, along with Ombak Tidur, is one of the most consistent waves. When the swell is small, it offers fun lefts and rights suitable for all abilities. When the swell hits 4ft and above, Iceland becomes a barreling left-hander with multiple sections, capable of handling swells up to 10ft for some spectacular sessions.

Awera Right (Out the Front)

Right in front of Awera Resort, this spot is the first to be checked each morning and serves as the main reference point. It's a consistent break throughout the surf season and is considered one of the top waves in the area, starting to work at 1-2ft and handling up to 6-8ft. This wave is a lot of fun, with occasional barrels in the first section and a good inside section for practicing turns. When the waves get bigger, it transforms into a longer, hollower ride.

Awera Left & Beginners (Out the Front)

Awera Left - Also located right in front of the resort, this wave requires a medium-sized west swell to start working. It can be fast and barreling, with shallow sections that are best suited for more aggressive goofy-footed surfers. Beginners is a gentle wave ideal for those new to surfing, this wave consistently breaks in the same place, offering beginners a predictable and easy paddle out to the lineup.

Tikus

This left-hander is a lot of fun and is considered one of the most enjoyable waves in the Mentawai. After a barrel section on the outside, the wave offers great opportunities for maneuvers. Intermediate surfers can work on their turns, while more experienced surfers can take advantage of the numerous ramps throughout the wave.

Tugis

This left-hander requires a good swell to start breaking and offers a barrel right at the take-off, followed by a turn section. It’s best at mid-tide but can work throughout the tide depending on the swell, challenging surfers to stay sharp and make the most of it.

Hookers

On the other side of the island, this long left-hander promises a great time for surfers of all levels. Due to its location on the north side, it requires a strong swell to start breaking.

Seven Palms

A playful left-hander perfect for days with a bit less swell. Depending on the swell direction, it can offer anything from cheeky barrels to turns. It works well with southeasterly winds and is always a good option when conditions are right.

Scarecrows

Located off an island called Pittojat, this wave is the longest in the area, offering rides up to 300m in length. It may not be the most perfect wave in the Mentawai, but it’s still one of the best places to carve turns and find some barrels.

Ombak Tidur

This break only needs a small swell to start working and is usually surfed in lighter conditions, as the reef is not well-defined and the wave can lack shape. However, it’s one of the most consistent right-handers in the area and works on all tides, offering a variety of peaks to keep surfers entertained.

Suicides

Named for the shallow and hazardous reef that surfers must navigate, this spot features an extremely fast and deep barrel that breaks over inches of water and razor-sharp coral. Conditions rarely align perfectly for this wave, but when they do, it can deliver one of the most intense sessions of a surfer's life.

Our stay at The Zen Den Guesthouse was great, especially from a surfer's perspective. The complimentary breakfast was not just amazing, but also incredibly delicious. As a surfer, I particularly loved the close proximity to the beach, making it incredibly convenient to catch the waves.
